"FROM SIN TO SAINT"
PODCAST AND VIDEO SERIES

During my time at Radiant, the project of which I'm most proud is without question the four-part podcast documentary called "From Sin to Saint", which is about the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who was murdered during World War II for his resistance to Nazi rule. The vast majority of the credit for this series goes to Josh Lash, who conceived the original idea for the show and spearheaded all of the pre-production and production. I had the great honor of handling the post-production side of things. As always, I used Pro Tools for my DAW and spent many weeks cleaning, editing, sound designing, mixing, and mastering this series. The long episodes (full of narration, interviews with experts, dramatic readings from Bonhoeffer's writings, music, and sound effects) made for a very challenging yet extremely enjoyable project. Of course, no show is perfect, but I'm pretty satisfied with the way it turned out in the end. Below is an embedded web player with all four episodes of the show (including a trailer I put together for the launch). As of March 2023, this is Patheos' most successful podcast.

"DEPICTING THE DIVINE"
YOUTUBE SERIES

Another project I had the pleasure of working on while at Radiant was a four-part video series about religious art. In addition to doing my normal post-production audio work on each of the four episodes, I was given the chance to serve as the narrator for this series, which I recorded in my home studio. I also had a hand in editing the original scripts and participating in video editing and motion graphic decisions along the way. It was really fun to be involved in the development and production of this series from beginning to end. The episode below is the first in the series and is Patheos' most-viewed video on their YouTube Channel to date. The other three can been found here.

"ANSWERS" PODCAST

The podcast on which I spent the most amount of time while at Radiant was Patheos' flagship "Answers" series. This show began as a video series a few years ago (before my time at Radiant) and it was my job to take the audio from those videos and convert them into podcast episodes. The series is made up of short, informational episodes that seek to provide straightforward answers to some of the most common questions about the major religions of the world. By the time my work with Radiant concluded, I had cleaned, edited, (re)mixed, and mastered over 40 episodes for this series and had even helped in the creation of new, podcast-only extended episodes such as "Why Do the World's Main Religions Claim the Same Holy Places?" (Episode 30), to name one example. I wrote, produced, and lent my voice for the intro and outro of each episode and spent lots of time trying to clean up old voiceover recordings that were tracked in, shall we say, suboptimal ways. I use iZotope RX in all of my audio projects, and that plugin suite was particularly utilized in this series. Despite the strength of iZotope's tools, however, this project hammered home for me the oft-taught principle in audio engineering that the ceiling of the final mix is directly related to the quality of tools and techniques used to capture the original audio source. While I can rest easy knowing that I did the best I could with the time and resources available to me, I can't say I'm happy with the way this series sounds at the end of the day. Ultimately, though, I learned a lot from my work on this show. The entire catalog of episodes can be found in the web player below.

"WHY I STAY" PODCAST

My work with Radiant/Patheos began at the end of 2021 as an independent contractor. At the time, "Why I Stay" was in the middle of production and they needed an audio professional to help them create polished, 30-ish minute episodes from the hour long remotely recorded interviews with various voices from across the Evangelical landscape. The series itself attempts to share stories of people who have decided to stay Christian despite having every reason to leave. Each episode includes an intro/outro and intermittent bumper music to break the interview up into different parts. Production wise, this was my first foray into the world of podcasting, so it was all challenging at the beginning, but looking back, the most difficult (and most time-consuming) parts of this series were the editing and mixing processes. It isn't easy to make recordings done with a laptop microphone sound decent, but I did a lot of experimenting and I'm mostly happy with the way the show turned out. Once again, I relied heavily on the iZotope RX Suite for this show. All nine episodes can be found below.

"THE BIBLE BRIEF PODCAST"

Similar to my work on "Answers," one of my first projects at Radiant Digital was the conversion of a recently produced three-part video series into a limited podcast series. "The Bible Brief Podcast" features two educators and friends in lighthearted dialogue with each other about how, in their view, the New Testament book of Revelation is grossly misunderstood in many circles of American Christianity today. Each episode seeks to untangle common interpretations of Revelation and present alternative ways of reading and understanding an admittedly confounding work of ancient literature. From a technical standpoint, this series presented me with many challenges, the primary one being how to deal with mic bleed. The audio from the original video shoot was, once again, captured in a suboptimal way, which resulted in a lot of mic bleed, room reverb, and low frequency rumbles, bumps, and plosives. And yet again, iZotope came to the rescue on all fronts. This series is far from perfect when it comes to audio fidelity, but I'm generally happy with the way it turned out in the end given the time and resources available to me. Lastly, I'll mention that I once again wrote, tracked, edited, and mixed the intro and outro for each episode of this series.

LINUS ILLUSTRATION

In my Adobe Creative Suite class at IPR, I was able to use the wonderfully powerful Adobe Illustrator to cartoonify my big, dopey (yet incredibly handsome) pup. While I don't consider myself to be an expert in Adobe Illustrator, I hope this goes to show that I do have some skills in and comfort with the software.

EXPLORE MN VOICEOVER

I had the great pleasure of serving as the assistant engineer for the VO session on this little 15 second spot for Explore Minnesota. I helped set up and tear down equipment for this session in addition to helping the sound lead figure out how to live stream this session via Zoom with the producer/director for this project. All the credit goes to Luke Harper (www.thelukeharper.com) on this one, who led this session and created the final deliverable.
